Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or diced
  • 4 slices thick-cut bacon, cooked until crispy and chopped
  • 1/2 cup high-quality ranch dressing
  • 4 soft hoagie rolls or ciabatta buns
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup fresh shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1 dash hot sauce
  • Optional: 1/2 avocado, sliced

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Sharp chef's knife or mezzaluna
  • Cutting board
  • Frying pan or oven (for bacon)
  • Toaster or oven broiler
  • Serving platter

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked shredded chicken and the chopped crispy bacon.
  2. Add the ranch dressing, garlic powder, black pepper, and optional hot sauce to the bowl.
  3. Use a sharp knife or a mezzaluna to gently chop the mixture directly in the bowl until the chicken and bacon pieces are uniform and thoroughly coated in the ranch.
  4. Fold in half of the shredded cheese into the chicken mixture until evenly distributed.
  5. Toast the cut sides of the hoagie rolls or ciabatta buns until they are golden brown and crisp to prevent sogginess.
  6. Generously spoon the chicken-bacon mixture onto the toasted rolls.
  7. Top with the remaining shredded cheese and place under a broiler for 30 seconds until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Layer the fresh lettuce, tomato slices, and red onion on top of the warm filling.
  9. Close the sandwiches and serve immediately.

Notes

To store, keep the chicken-bacon filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours, but add fresh lettuce and tomatoes only when ready to serve. For added creaminess, include avocado slices. If you want a spicy variation, add pickled jalapeƱos, or substitute chicken with leftover holiday turkey.
